My October Pop-by!!!

Here is the post I did a few years back of my caramel apple kits.  If you went to a Turning Point this year… you will have seen Brian Buffini showing it on the screen.  This was by far the most popular pop-by gift I have ever done.  It was so popular that I am doing it again this year.  I hope you enjoy it!

Well peeps… I just finished assembling my pop-bys for October… and it is a cute one.  I love to give pop-by gifts that I would love to receive myself.  So I came up with a caramel apple making kit. Here is what you need:   a quart-size mason jar, 2 cups of caramels (I bought mine bulk from a bin at Winco), 6 popsicle sticks,  bottle of sprinkles, ribbon, and some fabric. The total cost was $2.90 each… you could skip the sprinkles and get it down to $1.70 each, but everything is better with sprinkles. You could skip the mason jar and keep the sprinkles, then they would be $2.20 each.

Here it is… simply adorable.  I have a big soft spot for mason jars… and I guess caramels as well.  :)

The tagline: CARAMEL APPLE KIT! For a real estate transaction that is always “sweet” and never “sticky”! I am never too busy for you and your referrals!

Here are the directions to put on the back of the tag or slip the directions into the jar.

Makes 6 Caramel Apples: Insert sticks in apples and place on buttered cooking sheet. Place caramels in a microwave safe bowl, add 3 tablespoons milk, microwave for 2 minutes, stirring once. Roll apples in caramel quickly, decorate, and ENJOY!

Another alternative is just to buy tubs of caramel apple dipping sauce ($4 each) or bags of caramels ($2).

My Favorite Pop-by Item for November!!!

I had a great time last week attending the Anaheim Turning Point.  I passed out 1,200 booklets with pop-by ideas to the attendees and met some wonderful people.  Consistently the agents asked me what pop-by gift I was giving out this month.  Well, this weekend I spent both days passing out 50 chocolate advent calendars to my clients.  You may remember them from your childhood…  I surely do.  I delighted in opening up a new door filled with chocolate each day until Christmas. I drop these off the weeks before Thanksgiving, so that my clients have them in time to start devouring the chocolate come December.  It’s also a nice impression to leave with your clients before they meet with their family for Thanksgiving.  These little advent calendars are a hit with my adult clients and especially their kids. Many of my clients count on getting these each year. 

I have found the best and cheapest place to get these is at Trader Joes.  They sell them for a $1 each and usually arrive in the store around the 2nd week in November.  I usually get lots of stares and questions.  What a great oppurtunity to use the major campaign and add to your database.  If you are not blessed to have a Trader Joes near you… you can also find them at Cost Plus World Market or the dollar store.

How do you like them Apples?

As I attend Buffini events, the most common question I get from people is what is my favorite pop-by gift idea.  For Fall, I love to give baskets of apples.  I buy simple apple baskets from the dollar store and fill them with 5-7 apples.  A great thing to include with the basket is an apple recipe, a list of U-pick apple orchards, or an apple slicer.  We live close to the many orchards in Apple Hill located in Camino, CA, so we pick the apples for my clients each year with our daughters.  I also include a picture of my girls picking the apples.

Here is a great apple pie recipe to go along with the basket. 

Rustic Apple Pie
This double-crusted pie is made in a springform pan,
making it more like a mile high apple pie… a great showpiece dessert!!!
Ingredients

Crust:
2½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
3⁄4 cup vegetable shortening
6 to 7 tablespoons ice water
Instructions

Filling:
4 pounds tart apples (such as Granny Smith),
peeled, cored and sliced
½ cup all-purpose flour
1½ cups sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
Cinnamon-sugar (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 375F.
2. To prepare the crust, mix flour and salt in a large bowl. Cut in shortening using a pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add ice water 1 tablespoon at a time. Stir gently and gather into two balls, one abouttwice as large as the other.
3. Roll out larger ball on a lightly floured surface until it is large enough to cover the bottom and sides of a 9-inch springform pan, with about 2 inches of overhang. Roll the smaller dough ball into a 9-inch circle.
4. To prepare the filling, combine apples, flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt; toss well. Spoon into prepared crust. Sprinkle pieces of butter on top. Place top crust over filling. Fold overhang evenly around the top crust. Cut 10 to 12 slits in top crust. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar if desired. Bake about 1 hour or until crust is deep golden and the filling oozes through the slits. Serves 12.
